Components A of Sprayer Nozzles

The components of nozzles and their functions are:

  1. Nozzle body – the nozzle bodies can be brass, steel, ceramics, and plastics.  It is a major component of the sprayer that houses all the vital parts and helps to provide accurate spray applications.
  2. Swirl plate –   this could be a metal or rubber disc with two small holes that help to convert the pressure of the liquid by swirling or rotating the liquid passing through within the swirl chamber.
  3. Nozzle disc – It can be a hollow cone, solid cone, or a flat fan-type disc located in the body of the nozzle. This component can be plastics, ceramics, or metal with a small hole for the passage of the liquid. This component functions in such a way that when the fluid from the sprayer lever reaches the swirl plate, the fluid increases in pressure, which forces the fluid to sprinkle out of the orifices in desired particles. The discs are specifically designed in such a way that they can fit into the different nozzle bodies.  The nozzle discs help to modify fluid droplets and reduce pressures, and flow rates.
  4. Strainer- this component is optional in many nozzles, for some sprayers, it is located on the trigger axis while for others it is found on the nozzle. It is made of a circular plastic ring and wire mesh. It helps to filter foreign particles such as sand, dry leaves, and other particles coming with the fluid or liquid solution. The strainer helps to keep the nozzle in perfect spraying condition, preventing clogged nozzles.
  5. Spacer: This is a rubber ring usually located between the swirl plate and strainer to reduce and control the pressure of the liquid or solution coming into the nozzle for effective spraying.

Types of Sprayer Nozzle

Different types of Nozzles are available in the shop for various spraying activities in the agricultural industries. The common types of nozzle commonly used for low-pressure agricultural sprayers include the following:

  1. Flat-fan nozzle
  2. Flood nozzle
  3. Raindrop nozzle
  4. Hollow-cone nozzle

Flat-fan Nozzle

These types of nozzles are specially designed for spraying herbicides, Insecticides, Fungicides, and liquid fertilizers.

Different types of these nozzles exist for the spraying of chemicals. Whatever types of flat-fan spray Nozzle exist,  the common factor similar to all of these types of sprayers is the fact that they are either single holes or twin holes.

These nozzles can exist in various degrees. The twin sprayer is usually 30 degrees forward, and 30 degrees backward.

Advantages of the Flat-fan Nozzle

Disadvantages of The flat-fan Nozzle

Some of the  disadvantages of the sprayer Nozzle are:

  1. They are not suitable for broadcast applications since the bandwidth cannot be controlled with the nozzle height and the spray angle.
  2. The reduction of boom height reduces the drift potential more than droplet size.

Flood Nozzle

The flood nozzle can be metal, rubber, and ceramic. It has an angular cut feature which serves as an opening for the spraying liquid.

The angular cutting occurs in the form that it has an opposite surface facing the hole leading to the main sprayer.  The angle could be 90 degrees, 140 degrees as the case may be. The flood nozzles have a straight duct in which the pressurized fluid automatically flows to hit the opposite surface or the fluid will spread in fine droplets like that of the flat fan.

The nozzles have a cored angle structure which helps to guide the liquid to flow to the appropriate or required direction. The nozzle utilizes the principle of liquid’s surface tension, to determine the direction of spread of the liquid sprayed.

Advantages of the Flooding Nozzles

The following are the advantages of the flood sprayer Nozzle

  1. It is appropriate for spraying suspension chemicals.
  2. Since the hole is large, clogging is not a potential problem in this type of nozzle.
  3. These nozzles are most often used for spraying soil-incorporated agrochemicals.
  4. It can be mounted to tractor tillage implements.
  5. It is suitable for spraying systemic herbicides.
  6. It can be installed on spraying booms since the hole is larger compared to 110° fan nozzles

Disadvantage of the Flood Nozzle

  1. It is not as uniform in spraying compared to the flat-fan nozzles
  2. The nozzles are not suited for spraying contact herbicide.

Raindrop Nozzle

The Raindrop is a high-velocity chemical spray nozzle. Different types of raindrop sprayer nozzles exist for spraying agrochemicals. This could be metal, plastic, and ceramics with multiple holes which are usually more than four holes.

The nozzle usually comes in the form of a cone with multiple holes located in it. They are the modern types of nozzle used in the agricultural industries.

Advantage of the Raindrop nozzles

The following are the advantages of the raindrop sprayer nozzle are:

  1. They are used for broadcast application
  2. Since the hole is large clogging is not a potential problem in this type of nozzle.
  3. These nozzles are most often used for spraying soil-incorporated agrochemical

  6. They are high-velocity water sprays that can be used for firefighting, fire protection, health, and safety in farms or industries.

The disadvantage of the Raindrop Nozzle

  2. It cannot be used for post-emergence herbicides due to large drops.
  3. It produces large droplets leading to less drift.

 

 Hollow-Cone Nozzle

The hollow cone nozzle consists of a full cone and a fine hollow cone. Just as the name suggests, the nozzles are designed with an opening inside the cone.

It consists of several holes that allow droplets within the edge of the spray cone. The nozzle’s small holes release the solution in small droplets which help to give greater surface area when used.

Advantages of the Hollow-Cone Nozzles

Some of the advantages of the Sprayer Nozzle are 

  1. They produce the smallest drop size which gives the spray a greater surface area allowing for a fluid transfer.
  2. drift potential is higher in hollow-cone compared to the flooding

Maintenance of Sprayer Nozzle

  3. Wash the nozzle by removing the dirt and rinse thoroughly in clean water immediately after use.
